The East and West Pagodas /flanking Kaiyuan Temple/ are the best preserved stone pagodas/ in China./ They stand as a symbol/ of the ancient Quanzhou city./ At first, /the pagodas /were built of wood and stone,/ then brick, /and later stone. They have withstood 1000 years/ of earthquakes and tourists./
The East pagoda is named Zhengguo, /which means "
"./ It was built of wood/ in 670 A.D. /and was later rebuilt/ as a 48.24m Stone pagoda./ The west pagoda /is called Renshou, /which means "merit and longevity". / It was built/ in 916/.
