　　一天夜晚，燈光下媽媽在家里邊做玩具，邊看著新聞。我在書房里看書。突然，媽媽叫著：“穎兒，快來看！這新聞上的工人在和外國人說著什么？”我跑出來一看，只見電視上正在播放著一群外國人在參觀一個玩具公司，一個外國人正在和一位工人用英語在交談著的新聞。

　　“媽媽，我剛開始學的也聽不明白，不過播音員不是解釋著嗎？”我搖搖頭說。

　　“快看，這工人最后說的'Goodbye（再見）是什么意思？”

　　“那是再見的意思。您不也初中畢業嗎？您怎么聽不懂英語呢？”

　　“哎，別提了，那時我學習很不認真，成天只知道玩，現在后悔也來不及了。”媽媽深情地望了望我，“穎兒，你一定要好好學習呀，不能像媽媽這樣一無所長呀。”

　　媽媽望了望電視，自言自語地說：“唉，要是我也會說英語那該多好啊！……”

　　我安慰道：“媽，沒關系的。不如我來教你學英語吧，怎么樣？等奧運會辦完后許多外國人肯定會到胡適故居來參觀的，說不定還會到您的工廠去玩呢！”

　　“真的嗎？那好哇，我就跟你學英語，說不上我將來也能跟外國人聊上幾句。”媽媽高興地說。

　　從那天起，每天晚上，你只要經過我的家門口，那你一定會經常聽到一個小女孩在讀著英語：Whattimeisit？（幾點了），It’seighto’clock.（八點了）。還有一個婦女也跟著讀，這就是我和我的媽媽在讀英語。
