C Object complements 賓語補足語

賓語補足語通常由名詞(名詞短語)、形容詞(形容詞短語)、介詞短語、動詞不定式、副詞等構成,用于補充說明賓語的狀態。

e.g. I believe him honest.

We think her the best student in our class.

They call the baby Jack.

The news made her happy.

She preferred him to stay at home all day.

D Five kinds of sentence structures 五種句子結構

在英語中,句子通常可歸納為以下五種基本結構:

(1)主語+謂語 (S + V ) She laughed.

(2)主語+謂語+賓語 ( S + V+ DO ) He bought a T-shirt.

(3)主語+系動詞+表語 (S + V + P ) It sounds great.

(4)主語+謂語+賓語+賓語補足語 ( S + V + DO + OC ) I find her smart.

(5)主語+謂語+間接賓語+直接賓語 (S + V + IO + DO) Millie calls her dog Eddie.

遇到長一點的句子,我們可以把各部分的修飾成分放到一邊,試試把它簡化成這5種基本句型。

e.g. People who live in cold climates prefer to use warm colours to give their homes a warm and comfortable feel.

Language points:

1. The teacher is marking the tests. (P48) 老師在給試卷評分。

▲mark 在本句中是“給……打分;給……評等級”的意思,它還有“做記號于;標明;表明;標志;記下”等意。

e.g. She marked her son’s clothes with a red thread.

她用紅線在兒子的衣服上做了記號。

The teacher marked our examination papers and returned them to us.

老師給我們的考卷打了分,然后發還給我們。

The invention of the computer marked the beginning of a new era.

計算機的發明標志著一個新時代的開始。

2. They consider John the best actor. (P48) 他們認為約翰是最好的演員。

▲consider意思是“考慮;尊重”,但是它也常作“以為;認為”,后面可以接that引導的從句,也可以接as, to be,在本句中,to be被省略了。用法如下:

e.g. He considered that he had not been well treated by us.

他認為我們待他不好。

You surely can’t consider him to be a selfish man.

你絕不能認為他是一個自私的人。

Integrated Skills

1. My pen friend in the USA hasn’t replied to my last three e-mails.

我最近給美國的筆友寫了三封信,可他至今未給我回信。

▲reply意思是“回答;答復”,既可作及物動詞,也可作不及物動詞。作為不及物動詞時,還有“回擊;回報”之意,常與to連用。

e.g. I don’t know what to reply. 我不知道如何回答是好。

He gave me no chance to reply to his question. 他沒有給我回答他問題的機會。

We replied to the enemy’s attack by bombing their navy. 我們以轟炸其海軍來反擊敵人的進攻。

2. Maybe she’s just too busy these days. 也許她只是最近太忙了。

▲本句中隱含的意思是:太忙了以至于沒能回信。所以用了too,如果用very或quite就會顯得不恰當。

3. That’s what friends are for. 那就是交朋友的目的。

a) what是代詞,指代“所……的人或事物”

e.g. Show us what you have written. 把你所寫的給我們看看。

She is not what she was a few years ago. 她可不是幾年前的她了。

What she said is true. 她說的是真話。

b) what for意思是“為何目的;為何理由”。

e.g. What is this tool for? 這個工具是干什么用的?

Main Task

1. Many teenagers suffer from stress. 很多青少年都承受著壓力。

▲suffer意思是“遭受;經受”,可做及物動詞也可做不及物動詞。當做不及物動詞時,后面常接from, 表示“受……的苦”。

e.g. suffer pain

They suffered a great deal during the flood.

Suffer from cold and hunger.

2. Students should pay no attention to people who laugh at them. Instead, they should think about the things they are good at. 學生們不應該在意那些嘲笑他們的人,相反,他們應該多想想自己擅長做的事情。

instead, “作為替代”,可放在句首、句尾,常與of連用。表示“而不是”。

e.g. They are busy, let us go instead.

I’ll have fish instead of meat today.
